CALGARY -- Last week, Loverboy singer Mike Reno told the Sun he believed rock music should be positive and uplifting.
Although one could possibly debate the positive and uplifting qualities of Loverboy classics like Hot Girls in Love and Turn Me Loose, one thing is certain: In these days of moaning, bellyaching modern rock bands, Loverboy now provides a refreshing alternative to the alternatives, playing music that makes no big statement and never takes itself too seriously.
The Vancouver quintet's show last night at the Coca-Cola Stage was a reminder of what mainstream rock 'n' roll resembled 20 years ago and at the same time a carefree, entertaining show.
No surprise, really. These were the same five loverboys who burst upon the recording scene wearing those trendy headbands and red leather pants exactly two decades ago.
These are savvy musicians and showmen.
The band was still tight and full of juice, while Reno's voice still has that cocky, lascivious tone that allows him to carry off lyrics about not-so-sweet schoolgirls and the boys who love them.
You've got to admire a frontman who still tells the crowd things like, "Anyone wanna get lucky," and "Let's get this place jumpin'!" -- all without a hint of irony.
The alternative kids shot some disgusted glares, but Loverboy just kept giving their longtime fans exactly what they came to hear. And of course, there was no crowd surfing.
